What We Thought of Volvo Group’s Earnings

Despite a 9% contraction in net sales, Volvo reported a first-quarter adjusted operating margin of 11%, up 10 basis points year over year, once again highlighting the resilience of its business model. Truck deliveries fell 3%, as a 34% decline in North America offset growth in other regions.

Why it matters: Operating profitability was supported by 6% organic sales growth in the high-margin service business, alongside strict cost control and a favorable mix. Combined with high-capacity utilization in Europe, this offset under-absorption costs in North America, as well as SEK 2.1 billion in net US tariffs and foreign exchange impact.

  • North American truck deliveries fell due to planned production stoppages and should normalize over the year. Recent model renewals have seen strong market reception, with order intake up 78% despite a 23% year-over-year market contraction, and limited pre-buy activity expected ahead of the US Environmental Protection Agency’s 2027 regulations.
  • Solid replacement pace and freight activity remain supportive in Europe, with management raising its European 2026 registration outlook by 5,000 units to 310,000. Deliveries rose 17% in the quarter, while market share fell to 28.7% from 30.1% amid intensifying competition in the BEV segment.

The bottom line: We raise our fair value estimate for narrow-moat Volvo to SEK 270 from SEK 262, incorporating the latest results into our model. Our valuation implies a midcycle operating margin in line with Volvo’s through-the-cycle target of above 10%. Shares look overvalued.

  • Management noted no material disruptions to date from the Middle East conflict. Should demand soften amid rising fuel costs and a broad economic slowdown, we see Volvo as better positioned than peers, supported by strong cost discipline and a higher share of service revenue, which reduces margin volatility.
