What We Thought of Bayerische Motoren Werke’s Earnings
BMW reported a first-quarter automotive EBIT margin of 5%, within guidance and ahead of company-compiled consensus. Further cost-efficiency gains kept operating profitability in line with full-year 2025 levels despite tariffs and volume headwinds. Automotive free cash flow grew 88% year over year.
Why it matters: BMW is entering a more favorable phase in the investment cycle relative to other European OEMs, as the peak capital expenditure and R&D intensity linked to the Neue Klasse are behind the company, supporting cash generation. At the same time, the cost of sales and reductions in selling, general, and administrative expenses helped preserve profitability.
- Cost discipline measures provided a €500 million tailwind to margins year over year. Excluding the impact of US tariffs and BBA purchase price allocation, totaling 245 basis points, margins would have been just short of historic high-single-digit levels, despite a more competitive environment.
- Lower capital expenditure and R&D spending supported automotive free cash flow, which reached €777 million, up €364 million year over year. We expect the transition in the investment cycle following the start of the Neue Klasse rollout to continue supporting cash generation through 2026.
The bottom line: We confirm our €103 fair value estimate for no-moat BMW. Despite the 7% share price increase following the results, we still see meaningful upside to our valuation.
- BMW remains one of our top picks within the sector, supported by its track record of execution and postpeak capital expenditure positioning, which should enable a faster free cash flow recovery than peers.
- Management expects further cost reduction measures in 2026 to mitigate higher depreciation from prior investment cycles, lower R&D capitalization, and ongoing efforts to stabilize transaction prices in China. The current 4%-6% automotive EBIT guidance range does not incorporate potential disruption from a prolonged Middle East conflict.
