We retain our strong conviction in this income-focused strategy. Capital Group Global High Income Opportunities offers investors consistent income through a blend of emerging-market and high-yield debt exposure.
In line with Capital Group’s way of investing, each manager runs a sleeve, which in this case is divided equally among four people. Effective June 1, 2021, emerging-market debt manager Kirstie Spence and high-yield manager Shannon Ward joined their existing counterparts Robert Neithart and David Daigle on this strategy. This split the existing two sleeves into four: two emerging-market debt sleeves and two high-yield sleeves. Each manager has full discretion to trade within their sleeves. Spence joined the firm in 1995 and has spent her entire investment career at Capital Group, most of it comanaging emerging-market debt strategies alongside Neithart, accumulating a formidable record together. Ward joined Capital Group in 2017 from Oaktree, where she managed high-yield portfolios for 10 years, and has comanaged high-yield strategies with Daigle since joining the firm. The addition of two more decision-makers was to support the strategy’s growing asset size and growing opportunity set in recent years; it is consistent with the firm’s well-established multimanager approach and helps with succession planning.
In March 2023, the firm announced that Neithart, the strategy’s principal investment officer since its 1999 inception, was to retire at the end of 2023 after spending 35 years at Capital Group. On Nov. 1, 2023, Luis Freitas de Oliveira took over Neithart’s emerging-market sleeve. De Oliveira has over three decades of investment experience and joined Capital Group in 1994. His overall level of experience and tenure at the firm, and his experience in working together with other team members and the broader team, made him an adequate replacement for Neithart in our view. Ward took over the principal investment officer role from Nov. 1, 2023, onward.
The fundamental investment process, which relies on credit and country selection to drive alpha, is proven and has remained intact since inception. The mandate continues to invest across emerging-market debt—hard currency, local currency, and corporates—and high-yield corporate debt to provide a high level of total return, in which income is a big component. The yield has averaged around 7% for the past 10 years. With the recent addition of the new decision-makers’ different investment styles, the strategy benefits from increased diversification within each sub-asset-class sleeve, such as varied portfolio exposures and risk appetites. The transition into Article 8 under the SFDR regulation in June 2022 has introduced some formal environmental, social, governance, and norms-based exclusions alongside an explicit carbon footprint target. These, however, do not have an impact on the risk/reward characteristics and did not require significant positioning changes as the portfolio was already closely aligned to the new ESG investment criteria.
Over the past 20 years, the strategy has significantly outperformed its global flexible bond Morningstar Category peers and its category benchmark on both an absolute and risk-adjusted basis. Given its focus on emerging markets and high yield, the strategy has exhibited a higher volatility profile compared with its global flexible bond category. However, good credit selection over the years has resulted in significant outperformance. Outperformance against peers has also been very consistent with the strategy’s three-, five-, 10-, and 15-year performance ahead of peers.
