Rheinmetall RHM shares fell around 15% after Germany canceled the F126 frigate program, removing one of the largest components of the roughly EUR 12 billion naval nomination opportunity management had targeted for 2026.
Why it matters: A 15% share price decline implies value destruction far in excess of the economic value associated with a program. The move reinforces an existing bearish narrative around order conversion, procurement timing, and execution.
- The loss of F126 is more relevant for Rheinmetall’s EUR 80 billion 2026 nomination ambition than for its long-term investment case. The program represented a meaningful share of expected naval order intake this year, but only a modest contribution to the company’s 2030 revenue and value-creation potential.
- Management had previously identified F126 as part of roughly EUR 10 billion-EUR 12 billion of naval opportunities spread over a 10-year period, implying around EUR 1 billion-EUR 1.2 billion of annual revenue at maturity, or approximately 2% of Rheinmetall’s 2030 revenue ambition.
The bottom line: We maintain our EUR 2,380 fair value estimate. The cancellation is more relevant for near-term nomination expectations than for intrinsic value. While it weakens the naval narrative in the short term, F126 was never central to Rheinmetall’s long-term investment case, and its cancellation removes a source of execution risk.
- Frigate programs are complex, long-duration projects with high execution and cost overrun risk. Given F126’s delays and rising costs, combined with naval shipbuilding’s materially lower margins versus Rheinmetall’s core businesses, the value lost is well below the headline contract value.
