The US-Israel military operation against Iran and the subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz have introduced a major exogenous shock that is reshaping Wizz Air’s near-term outlook.
Why it matters: The oil shock has flipped fuel from tailwind to headwind precisely as Wizz’s hedge protection rolls off. Wizz hedges 83% of fiscal-year 2026 fuel (ending in March) but only 55% for fiscal 2027 (includes three-quarters of calendar 2026), the lowest in our European airline coverage.
- Wizz Air warned that the Middle East conflict could reduce fiscal 2026 net income by about EUR 50 million, pushing results below prior guidance of positive EUR 25 million to negative EUR 25 million. We estimate a 29% EBIT hit for fiscal 2027 from a maintained 10% jet fuel increase.
- The disruption comes amid an already fluid Middle East strategy. Wizz recently exited and then reinstated parts of its Abu Dhabi operation and had been exploring a base in Israel, while still managing Pratt & Whitney engine groundings and supply chain constraints.
The bottom line: We lower Wizz Air’s fair value estimate by 17% to £12.2, reflecting higher fuel and operating costs in fiscal 2027-28, delayed margin recovery (now fiscal 2028), and a higher execution risk premium. Despite extended GTF compensation and tighter cost control, the path to margin recovery has materially lengthened.
- Wizz Air’s investment case was built on margin normalization as GTF groundings ease and the fleet transitions to all-NEO by 2029. The oil shock delays that normalization and introduces a new cost headwind precisely as hedge protection is rolling off.
- The operational risk is compounding—Middle East airspace closures are forcing costly tech stops and route detours, and elevated network churn (9 times the industry average over the past 12 months) is adding to cost pressures and diluting revenue per available seat kilometer.
